They sold me a ticket to New Jersey…
This was posted originally at my WordPress blog, here.
…and I haven’t seen it in the daylight yet to determine whether it sucks as much as Weird Al claims. In any case, Priceline won’t be getting a call from my lawyers: everything’s compensated anyway. That said, what I did see from the window of a commuter jet was admittedly rather terrifying.
I’ve been on the road since 4:00a, and traveled from my own local noon to well after sundown. It’s exhausting. Also, I didn’t eat much, and had to boost my blood sugar with I didn’t care what. 4 points that I would have spent on something awesome back home went instead to an oatmeal bar.
The clock says it’s 8:00p. It feels like 10:00p–time for The Daily Show and bed by my own internal standards. Yet I still need to press clothes for tomorrow. I shall do that first. |

Christmas gift ideas
It's time to tell my in-laws what I want for Christmas. I have an Amazon gift list so I'm particularly looking for ideas other than books/DVDs/CDs. I have a few things in mind, but if there's anything I should know about that you think I don't already have and I would love for Christmas, this would be a good time to recommend it to me. Thanks in advance for inciting my consumer greed and doing your part to grease the wheels of American commerce. Current Mood: curiousCurrent Music: Tom Waits, Tom Waits - Fannin Street (Live) |

Pedipus Interruptus
So tonight's show was pretty darn fine, but it got cut off somewhat short before they intended it to. (On the other hand, I think we'd have only had something like two more songs anyways - it's not like we can do an entire set's worth of songs there...) I got the iPhone out to record the set after the first song, which is kind of sad - sad, at least, that I didn't get it prepped beforehand and so I missed a REALLY great version of Dagberto. Really, the band was just together all round - Beans, Jimb, Susan, bassfingers and omorka all sounded good, and they were really tight tonight. In any case, here's the tracks from the evening - they're mono mp3 tracks, on account of my forgetting the Mikey for the iPhone. (I have to say, though, that the iPhone is GREAT for recording shows, even if it's only mono without the Mikey - this is a pretty sweet recorder.) I'm hoping to try and get video for these sometime, but I don't know how yet - if I try and attach a camera to my head (a la these), anyone who watches it will get motion-sick EXTREMELY fast. (Imagine Blair Witch-like video shot by a dancer at a rave. Kinda like that.) In any case, I reiterate : January 23rd at Dan Electro's. (And First Saturday, although he might put that one on hold since it's going to be January 2nd - I'll keep you posted.) And another thing held over from last month : | Tortuga Mundo So, at the last First Saturday, I'd asked Beans about the price on this one. He proceeds to take the thing off the wall and tell me that it's my Christmas bonus. So, um, yeah. Needless to say, I had no idea how to respond to that one, aside from a sputtered "Thank you".

Pixies in 4e
Someone asked for a pixie race for players in 4e ( over on RPG.net). My quickie take: I'll give it a shot; note that this is based on the 3.5 pixie, since I don't have MM2 (if, indeed, they are in there). Pixies: Ability Scores: +2 Dex, +2 Int (equal case could be made for Charisma, based on the 3e stats, but giving them an Int bonus with a Dex bonus is weaker Size: Small Speed: 5 squares Vision: Normal Languages: Common, Elven Skill Bonuses: +2 Perception, +2 Stealth Reactive Stealth: If you have cover or concealment when you make an initiative check, you can make a Stealth check and escape notice. Prestidigitation: You may use Prestidigitation (as the wizard cantrip) as an Encounter power with a minor action. Flutter: You have Flutter as an encounter power. Flutter You fly briefly, covering great distances Encounter Move Action/Personal Effect: You may fly for a number of squares equal to twice your movement. You must end this movement on solid ground or you will fall. Special: You may choose to fly at twice your movement +4 squares, but you take all the penalties for running. This covers a lot of the pixie powers in 3e... you can fly (sorta), create minor illusions and other minor magical effects, and you're sorta invisible and hard to see (reactive stealth). However, it's fairly balanced with other races. Flying is not as good as teleporting (since you can't use fly to escape most Grabs or move while Immobilized or Restrained), so the extra speed is a bit of a wash. They make good Rogues, Rangers, and Wizards, and can do some nice things as a warlock or taclord. |

Travels and Adventures, part gazillion and one
This was posted originally at my WordPress blog, here.
I’ve done more travel this year than I have in any year previous. I’ve now got reservations to be in three more states (though admittedly, Illinois and Virginia are mere layovers, New Jersey is the destination). A fourth (New York) is not even a day trip away, and I may find myself at Rockefeller Plaza on Tuesday night to check out the decorations as a tourist does. I’ll be leaving on Monday and returning on Wednesday. Food and taxi/bus fare aren’t covered, but everything else is. Yeah, I know the taxi will be pricey, but I do NOT want to drive in New York or New Jersey. Hell, driving in San Diego got me into an accident.
Even if I don’t make the side trip, I will stand in a city larger than my hometown: I have a layover at O’Hare, completing one of my travel goals for the year. The other may happen tomorrow night without me even leaving my own home: see an accumulation of snow (2-4 inches are predicted in Houston/Fort Bend County tomorrow night). I’ve also managed to see a mountain for the first time in my life (several, actually) and stand on all three American coasts this year.
Perhaps this interview will go well, and I’ll get next year’s goals in early: move, preferably to another metropolitan area, and start working for a living. |

BPAL - Swank Simply cool, the essence of Lounge: the scent of a crisp pomegranate martini.Yet another free imp. Forum review here. First impression: Candy! Like Sweet Tarts or those necklace candies I used to get at Farrell's when I was a kid, Application: Still very candylike. I can start to smell something else deepening it out after a few minutes but the sweet-tart notes remain dominant. Dry down: Faint after a couple of hours. Less sweet-tart and some of what I guess is the alcohol notes coming through. Definitely not for me. I might think the scent was OK on someone else but it's not my speed and definitely not with my body chemistry. I am just not a swanky lounge-o-leer. Wednesday night karaoke practice
A bunch of us got together for early karaoke at the Roost last night to practice one more time. I've gotten to the point where I really like the early karaoke; it gives me a chance to try out new things with a relatively supportive audience (most of the people there were from our team, and the KJ was our KJ for our last league season). We tried out what I expect to be our league finale, which needs a bit of work but should have plenty of wtfery. Our goal is not to win, but to be remembered, and I think this one will be. Also, I think we've decided that our team name next time around is Team STAGEBONG (allcaps are important here). I sang five times, which isn't a record for me, but comes close. (I sing more in closed rooms but this was five on stage, not counting the group song, which I have a special non-singing role in.) I finally tried Love Is a Stranger and I may just have to accept that I don't have the full range for it--although where my voice left me wasn't the place that I expected it to. Then I did You Only Live Twice (a la Nancy Sinatra, not Bjork, although I think the Bjork version is a pretty straight rendition as Bjork songs go), Jungle Love by the Time, which is almost league-ready, another stab at I'm Too Sexy (which is league ready) and last, but not least, the Cardigans' Lovefool, which I was surprised that I did well on given that I'd blown Love Is a Stranger earlier. I was disappointed to learn that despite it being in the catalog, they didn't have a copy of the Animaniacs theme. I am so doing that later, though. It's on my nefarious karaoke list. If I take a solo next week (unlikely) or if I take one in finals, I'm confident I have several songs I can bring to bear for league. Last season at this point I was severely burned out. This time, while I'm ready for league to be over, it's not in a bad way. Also, there's an interleague competition in January and we are so wtfing out for that to earn a slot even if we don't win league. WTFery will never die. What would be a retweet if this were originally tweeted , but since not it's just a repost from Facebook: Jimb Jackson is issuing fair warning--BEANS BARTON and the BIPEDS--January 23rd--Dan Electro's Whammy Bar. Noah says BE THERE. Also, while we're at it, first Saturday show this week at J. Hardings - starts about 6:30, acoustic stuff, should be good.
